Canutillo ISD Breaks Ground on a More Connected, Secure Future
A more than $4 million private fiber wide area network from WANRack Powered by Gateway Fiber, in partnership with UDT, will strengthen speed, reliability, and security across the district.
Canutillo Independent School District marked an important milestone with the groundbreaking of a major technology infrastructure project. The campus will become the hub for a new private fiber network reaching schools and district facilities across this proud, growing district on El Paso’s Northwest side and Upper Valley.
Building a Network for Today’s Schools
School districts have distinct connectivity responsibilities. Every day, Canutillo ISD relies on its network to support instruction, student devices, employee systems, financial operations, communications, and safety tools. It also handles sensitive student and employee information that must be protected. A private wide area network gives the district dedicated connections between its locations, creating a stronger foundation for consistent service, future growth, and more direct control over network performance.
Modern Technology Is Essential to Education
Modernizing technology is not simply an add-on to education. It is critical to delivering it. WANRack Powered by Gateway Fiber, in partnership with UDT, is helping Canutillo ISD build a modern private fiber network designed around the district’s needs. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
For a district that describes its mission as preparing students for a technologically sophisticated world, the impact is practical and personal. Reliable connectivity helps teachers deliver lessons, students use laptops and digital resources, and employees serve families without avoidable interruptions. It also supports campus safety systems, including tools used for identification and background checks.
A Districtwide Investment in Reliability and Security
At its core, the initiative is a private fiber wide area network project. It represents more than $4 million in technology infrastructure investment designed to significantly improve the speed, reliability, and security of the district’s network. The project is funded through the federal E-Rate program, which helps schools and libraries obtain affordable telecommunications and internet access, with district leaders reporting that no local taxpayer dollars are being used.
Although much of the infrastructure will operate behind the scenes, its benefits will be felt across Canutillo ISD. Greater resilience and uptime can help keep virtual classrooms, digital learning tools, security systems, and daily operations connected. For a district known for combining a close-knit community with innovative learning opportunities, the network is more than a technology upgrade. It is a long-term investment in safer data, stronger classroom connections, and new possibilities for students, educators, employees, and families.
